
The New Forest is the largest unenclosed area in the South East of England. It spans an area of 140,000 acres. It was originally granted Royal Forest status by King William I in 1079 and today around 90% of it is still owned by the Crown. Much of the forest is heathland and is best known for the wild ponies that roam free. a lot of the trees were felled to make the wooden ships for the navy. Lyndhurst is the ideal base for visitors to the New Forest, being the main town and administrative capital of the area. It has the New Forest Vistors Centre and a number of shops, reaturants and hotels to cater for the visitors. The church is an interseting landmark, made of different colour bricks and Alice Hargreaves, the inspiration of Alice in Wonderland is buried there. The New Forest has an amazing array of wildlife including a number of rare plants. It is also a popular centre for a number of activities including cycling and hiking with a number of hotels, guest houses and holiday parks.
